Many of you are already familiar with the name Derek Sivers, he is the gentlemen responsible for CD Baby-perhaps the best service to independent musicians ever created. I began using CD Baby in the early 00's and attribute much of success (and sales) to this site/service. Recently, Derek had contacted me with an opportunity to use a track of mine in his recently published book Anything You Want. I submitted an ECHOTOMB track, and thankfully it made the cut and I couldn't be more ecstatic about announcing this.

Derek Sivers is best known as the founder of CD Baby. A professional musician (and circus clown) since 1987, Derek started CD Baby by accident in 1998 when he was selling his own CD on his website, and friends asked if he could sell theirs, too. CD Baby was the largest seller of independent music on the web, with over $100M in sales for over 150,000 musician clients. I'm currently compiling the pictures, audio and video to post. Day 2's evening set was mammoth. Shane Morris an Kevin Haller cranked out a great set of progressive ambient, followed by Mark Mahoney and myself debuting new material that went over well. My apologies for screaming at the guy in the kitchen that dropped the Chinese Gong (it was probably a pan or a skillet), you're timing was off. Fix that and you're money. Tay0 ended the night with a very impressive IDM/Glitch set that I could have listened to until sun up.
Thanks again to Jim Combs for a great weekend of music and hospitality. More to come....

Arrived around 4:30, check in, unload gear, unwind. The venue is only minutes away, nestled in the Oakhurst area of Decatur. An oasis if you will of hipsters and shitsters. Designer couples with their designer dogs, $800 strollers and GAP ad children. But on the other hand, you've got people just like you and me. The kind of people Republicans really wish didn't exist.
First up- Drachemusik, aka Charles Shriner. A one man cyber jazz ensemble from Indy. This was a new set, more akin to his after-hours sets with some modal improvasations over the top of the glitch beat backdrop. Broken Symmetry followed and froze time for about 45 minutes with a deep, deep, ambient set. Having never heard these guys, I'm glad I didn't miss them. Up next was some of the finest tribal ambient I've seen or heard live to date thanks to Tony Gerber and Paul Vnuk Jr. Damn. Finishing the night was an impromptu collaboration from Burning Artist(s) Sale featuring Kevin Haller, Shane Morris, and Klimchack, which started as a a floating, spacey movement, inevitebly set course for an electro-acoustic, polyrhythmic orgy finale.
Back at the hotel, Mark and I set up shop and listened to playback of our recent rehearsals.Rather, I did. I don't think Mark made it past the 7 minute mark.

The Gatherings-Afterthoughts

Last Friday I took off for Philly to perform on Saturday night. Weather was perfect and the iPod shuffle was really into the Black Keys and Aphex Twin that day. Not too shabby and no complaints there.
Pulled into Carlisle rather than hopping onto the PA Turnpike and get some food and check into the Travel Lodge. Your basic Patel Hotel, but the room was surprisingly huge. So setting up for a late night jam was certainly in order.

Saturday Morning. 6:35 am. It's pissing the rain and about 50F outside. Nice. 2.5 hour drive into Philly on the turnpike. Nice. Thankfully there were no accidents. But the driving was horrible. 45mph wind gusts and everything was washed out. I got to St. Mary's at about 3:00pm. It was Record Store Day so I decided to check out what all was released. Sadly everything had been picked through and just a few things leftover from 2010. Killing time at Smokey Joe's enjoying a draft. The rain wouldn't stop.

After soundcheck, Howard Moscovitz, Bill Fox, Vic Hennegan and I went to Hummus for dinner. Good conversation over a warm Mediterranean meal.

When we got back to St. Mary's, I was pleasantly surprised to see more people had shown up despite the rain. I went on first, right at 8pm. I performed an all new 45min. set which I plan to release later this year. Mixing around the rain and watching the lightning light up the stained glass... pretty amazing backdrop to say the least.

After the show I had a few moments to say good-bye to Chuck, Art, Scott and Jeff before the drive back to the hotel. I hated to leave, but it was time to get moving as I was catching a break in the weather. The turnpike was desolate and surreal and I was buzzing from the experience of playing another Gathering.

Like I said it was raining. Pretty much the theme of the day. When I pulled into the parking lot, there was a newly formed river between me and the Patel Inn. Nice. Water was over the hood as my little Jetta dove in face first. Here's a pic of the water the next morning. Thankfully it has receded somewhat. But still.

Serving Time In The Middle of Johnson City

A few weeks ago I found out one of my all time favorite bands EYEHATEGOD were to spread the "End Time Message" in the Hideaway in Johnson City, TN. Now, if you haven't ever been to JC, it is situated at the buckle of the bible belt. And when you see a name like EHG, you immediately conjure images of pentagrams, devil worship and all other things associated with satanism. You couldn't be further from the truth. EHG, quite simply and self proclaimed is a "post amplification blues" band, albeit marinated in a heaping dose of toxic bayou runoff.

They opened up with Take As Needed For Pain, the title track from their second full length from way back in '93. Needless to say, the Hideaway and it's 100 or so patrons went berserk making me thankful that I have health insurance as fists, legs, and bottles were flying through the air like wreckage from a Greyhound and Budweiser collision. Just like the good old days. And it never let up for the rest of the sonic sermon.

Last Friday's show at the Hideaway was perhaps the most fulfilling set I've had in a long time. Days before I would not have thought that as the video card in my trusted Sager took a dump which presented a whole new opportunity to jam on some hardware. Bryan and I performed two pieces (Untitled, Hide and Play Dead) and executed them with unbridled intensity and passion. You truly had to be there (which by the way, where were you?)
Next up was Mannequin Hollowcaust, a veteran of the NETN noise scene and all around great guy. It seems MH has finally found his niche colliding power electronics with pre-war area mountain singer mashups. The result is a haunting delivery of Appalachia Experimentalism at its finest. Next up was Xrin Arms, which totally threw us a curve ball with a brilliantly executed set of underground hip hop. JC's own KILLBOT closed the night with a 20 minute set of chipped out gabbergrind. With an impromptu piece at the end discussing the terminology of Computer Science, who would of thought chanting HTML could be so fun?

Last Wednesday proved to be an excellent night. Hostage Pageant opened the night with a wonderfully executed analog noise set. Great use of textures ebbing and flowing from some hand built and custom gear that one rarely sees here in East TN. His set was short, my only complaint because I could've withstood another 30 minutes easy. Up next was yours truly. I pulled off a totally improvised set with the laptop and my Akai MPK25 controller using Reaktor and Atmospheres. I'll post the set in a day or so. Following me was Bryan Lewis Saunders. Prior to the show he had asked if I would join him and put a little mojo to what he had going on, which I gladly obliged. Here's a clip of our set.

The fine folks at NPR have been so kind to post two entire full lengths of the latest albums from The Black Keys and Harvey Milk. Somehow the two go hand in hand.
"Brothers", the latest from the Akron based blues outfit The Black Keys is more than just a rehashed, second stab at Attack and Release; it's perhaps the best the band has yet to put out. Teaming up again with producer Danger Mouse, this slab of folk/rock/blues relies more on the lyrical content and arrangement than previous Black Keys releases and it shows. Each track is a stand out, there isn't a dull moment. And damnit I mean that.

On Harvey Milk's latest release ""A Small Turn of Human Kindness"shows a glimpse vulnerability and sincerity that often falls to the wayside of other bands that jumped on the Neur-Isis bandwagon a decade or so ago. It was all to predictable then, as it is now. However, Harvey Milk again seem to veer left of any traditional molds despite a tuned down predominance akin to Neurosis, Sleep or the Melvins at their slowest. There is a stark originality that they have always reeked of, perhaps that's the reason your local scene kids never 'got' them and thankfully never will.

City Skies Fest Day 2

The first session began on Saturday at 1pm with Drachemusik (Charles Shriner) and was easily the afternoon's standout. His set included revisited tracks from his last two Cd's, as well as some new material. I had met Charles at the Electro-Music 08 festival and was blown away by his set then, this past weekend's set was no exception.

The evening session began with my compadre Mark Mahoney that delivered an outstanding set of reverb drenched deep space atmospherics and glitched out rhythmic passages that really set the bar high for the rest of the evening that included myself, Richard Layneheart, Richard Devine and Duet for Lapsteel and Theremin. Devine's set was close to an hour long of experimental electronics composed of all modular gear, which was a treat as he generally performs with his trusted Elektron set up and laptop(s).

We made it home with no problems which was great considering that just west of us, Nashville received a year's worth of rain in just one day. Some of the performers at the festival are from Nashville, and our thoughts were going out them as we navigated our way home and avoided the rain whilst enjoying the music of Drachemusik and Judy Chicago.

All in all this was a great festival despite zero sales, complete lack of local attendance and a tight stage footprint. I played a set of new material which seems to have went over well despite a predominant dose of space/ambient music that penetrated the weekend. Don't get me wrong, I love me some ambient, obviously as I've composed my share of it, but it was 8 o'clock when I took the stage, and I was ready to drop some hell on that room, and did so gracefully. Thanks again to Jim, Kavarna and Stillstream for a wonderful weekend.

I rolled into town Friday afternoon, unloaded at the Patel Inn and B lined it towards Kavarna to catch an evening of tone floating and observing. Klimchak stole the evening with a diverse set of upeat percussive electronica. Afterwards, it was back to the Inn to work on some final routing for my set and some late night Atlanta Public Access television. Exciting I know.

This Saturday night at the Hideaway in good ol' Johnson City, I'll be sitting in with resident hyper-phonic noise terrorists The Growth. They have a revolving cast of members, but firmly anchored by long time experimental artist Todd Burris at the helm and bassist Daniel Dugger holding up the low end.
I've seen them with a drummer, without a drummer. With junk percussion and without. With... it's always morphing and never the same. A translation of moment and feeling with total disregard for acceptance.
Working off that ethic, I've opted to go sans laptop and derive inspiration with a different albeit more primitive approach to help fill the spaces to that which is The Growth.

Kavarna: afterthoughts

It was a great night for live music last Saturday in Decatur's Kavarna; located in somewhat of an oasis in the downtown area. A surprisingly large number of people were on hand and close to a hundred were tuned in on stillstream.com to listen in on the evening's performances.

This collaboration between myself and Mike Honeycutt has found us both working in different ways than previously done so through our solo efforts. Tonight's session went great. Within a few minutes of setup and prep we were at it in no time. It's particularly nice to work with an artist that is already well rehearsed, as is the case with Daniel.
We put down around 10 tracks that now await post production, editing and mixing that will commence tomorrow. I'd have a go at it tonight as I'm still riding the Killbot buzz but I know my ears are worn out and will approach it tomorrow with a fresh set on.

"M.Peck (also known as Michael Peck and Redfadesbeforeblue) is a composer of electronic and dark ambient soundscapes. He’s been recording music with digital synthesizer, software applications and Theremin since 2000. Already known to the electronic scene as a maestro of ominous dark ambient, he brings us Dysmha.

“Deathbed Memory” is a texture of ambient sounds woven with Theremins, guitar effects, cymbals and some truly ghost-like vocals. It has what can best be described as a monumentally glacial mood. This is definitely music to conjure up a sinister atmosphere. Howling effects ascend and descend into a wasteland of eerie sounds.

“Ghost With Conscious”, while similar in sounds has a definite industrial slant to it. My only dispute is that maybe it’s a fraction too alike, as one song seemed to end without a new one beginning. That being said, it is a cohesive piece in relation to “Deathbed Memory” with a continuation of menacing sonic journey.

A level of above par production must be mentioned. In a word, it’s flawless. M.Peck’s technical ability is about as close to perfection as a performer can come to. That perfection can lean on the side of coldness, but maybe that was the point of the compositions within themselves. After all how many of our memories are of the warm and fuzzy nature (found on the deathbed or not)? Could the specter without awareness of their thoughts and actions be those around us or our own selves? Maybe M. Peck is asking us for that answer.

"When Chaotic Underworld started in 2004 our intentions were to produce and release experimental music within the general area of East Tennessee. Five years later our intentions are still the same however we have been able to spread out in many different directions across many different genres to create a diverse and interesting catalog. Invisible Girlfriend and a Long Ass Bikeride

Usually, I approach indie-docs with a grain of salt. But more often than not, I'm left with a surreal perception of a life I don't lead; and don't want to lead-usually for good reason.
Case in point, "Invisible Girlfriend" featuring Charles Fiholl and his invisible girlfriend Joan of Arc, as in the same woman burnt at the stake, right-her.
Right, so, Charles sets out on a journey to New Orleans via bicycle encountering all walks of life that inhabit rural Lousiana and the revealing aspects of life that keep both Charles and them placed in their animated state of drug abuse, depression, paranoia, an inept ability to communicate through swearing and vocalized hallucinations and simple lives that allow them to feel, perhaps visualize an existence rarely encountered by outisiders or often avoided. It's an enchanting and claissic tale of man vs. self and how much mileage can be covered on a one speed bike, determination and how quickly those with nothing-give everything. Thank God it's flat down there.

Thanks to all that came out for my set last Saturday. The cover was a bit steep for a free festival and that kept a majority of the people outside to enjoy the music. Luckily, drinking and smoking were not an issue as this was JC's 10th annual Blue Plum arts and (mainly bluegrass) music festival. 3000+ people were on hand and a few hundred wandered in and out the doors of JC's premiere live venue,or at least my favorite anyway. It was nice to see a lot of new faces and thanks to those that purchased CD's and have sent emails of encouragment etc.

Definitely not one for those of delicate ambient sensibilities, Dysmha creeps malevolently into the "doombient" bag with the emphasis on the doom- rather than the (am)bient. DQ (Doom Quotient) is cranked down past the fuzz/buzz-point where you'd locate Fear Falls Burning, and past the gruzz/scuzz-point of Nadja, rendered namby-pambient by comparison. Nearest spirit-kin for these diseased slabs of creeping audio-efflatus would be in the sludge dungeons of Sunn O))). Walls of corrosive guitar, theremin and audio-scum are stirred together into a foul brew of purulent atmospheres of oppressive expressivity. That's opener, "Deathbed Memory." An excoriating pitch black exercise of asphyxiating dense guitar sludge dredged up from some Stygian depths, all toxic brimstone and bitter treacle, is its companion piece "Ghost with No Conscious," a harbinger of no less nihilist doom-gloom.

Now Michael Peck, previously known for a rather elegant strain of glacial ambient-electronica, has no previous form for such dystopian tracts. But he certainly reinvents himself convincingly here as documenter of dystopia. These great belches of withering steel-scuzz are not spewed up from Peck's processor out of the sheer bloody-mindedness of experimenting with a different look. He's not Being Dark, just for the sake of it. It's an aesthetic choice, a deliberate change of voice for articulation of a howl of protest. A searing blast of pent up frustration against a toxic Republican regime, finally let out after years of suppressed revolt. Released the day Bush left office (January 20th, 2009), the punning title plays on the phonetico-semantics of 'dismal'/'dismay,' with a downcast eye to the world's future and the US's deleterious role as steersman charting a course for oblivion. A work in which the bilious vapours of its sounds - the very air coming off it as it leaks thickly from speakers besmirched by its scabrous delivery - seem to crawl with nightmare effluvia. Abandon hope, all ye who enter here.

Over the past week or so I've been getting material ready for this Friday's show at Club Chrome in Johnson City. I'm a bit apprehensive to say the least given the club's demo and psychographics (college kids lookin' to score) as I'm used to playing a place where people come out to hear the music. On the bright side they do have a nice stage area and plenty of watts to shake your colon and there should be 150+ people on hand. Something's bound to give.

Fallen into another Patton binge again. Recently picked up two recent releases of his: A Perfect Place CD/DVD and Crank High Voltage soundtrack.
A.P.P. definitely took me back to Bungle's California and his second solo release (title I can't recall). It's a Niceuh.
The Crank soundtrack is the real winner between the two. Elements of everything he has ever done. Cynical vocal commentary ala RV, Sound Collage, spot on sequencing and sampling and all 32 tracks are short sweet much like the Fantomas equation. AND one track (#9) features programming from Richard Devine which is a standout on the album and I'll be damned if track 18 isn't one of the catchiest phrases I've heard in sometime.

Apparently not enough people. Last night, the wifey and I hit the road to catch up with our friend the Voodoo Organist at the Rocket Club (very cool) in Asheville. Scott and Robin had nice tight (and quick) set. Sound and room atmos were perfect. Wednesday, Earth Day of all days the Rocket Club is hosting Anal Cunt. This I gotta see. A.C.+Earth Day=?
